Having completed our first contracted year as IBT 986 members, many Metro Ambassadors are left wondering about the term status of our shop stewards. There was never a defined or outlined term limit conveyed to us nor can any such information be found in our local’s bylaws.

As it stands, we have seven shop stewards serving around 200 Ambassadors, spread across six deployment sites. There has not been a strategic effort to disperse an equal number of shop stewards across deployment sites nor consideration of proportionality to ambassadors at each deployment site. Shop stewards service at deployment sites has been left to be randomly designated based on the individuals’ respective bidding results.

Out of the seven shop stewards currently serving, only two were voted in by IBT brothers and sisters at one deployment site, Union Station. As a result of the recent annual bidding, only one voted shop steward remains at Union Station.

We need a reconfiguration of shop stewards per deployment site to more effectively serve their fellow rank n file co-workers.

We, the dues paying IBT 986 Ambassadors at LA Metro feel that we all deserve a chance to democratically elect the shop stewards who are here to serve and uplift us.

  • Teamsters Against ICE

    Teamsters Against ICE

COFTU has endorsed the petition below, initiated by Teamsters Mobilize.

We, the undersigned Teamsters and supporters of the union movement, demand that the International Brotherhood of Teamsters leadership:

    1. Condemn the state executions of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by ICE and CBP agents.
    2. Organize for an end to any contracts with ICE, including the ICE/UPS contract.
    3. Defend members who refuse to comply with ICE operations on the job.
    4. Hold local meetings, open to all membership in person and on Zoom, to discuss the ongoing state terror against the working class, and the potential use of political strikes to fight back.
    5. Defend the people’s right to bear arms, as is protected by the Second Amendment.
    6. Oppose the spread of the dystopian surveillance technology developed by Palantir and other companies for US federal agencies, which is being used on all people regardless of immigration status and is a test run for fascist rule in the US.
    7. Call for the abolition of ICE, a brutal and anonymous federal police force. The first step is its immediate removal from US cities. ICE is a new and disturbing outgrowth of the state and a product of the so-called “War on Terror.” ICE is not just a threat to immigrants, but to all workers in the US.

  • Petition to Merge: FAQ

    Petition to Merge: FAQ

We, the members of ATU, SMART and TCU petition to merge in accordance with the AFL-CIO Constitution, Article III, Section 8: “Affiliates of the Federation shall be encouraged to eliminate conflicts and duplications in organization and jurisdictions through the process of voluntary agreement or voluntary merger.” As long as we are divided, Metro can play us off each other, encouraging conflict between our unions to drive down all our wages and benefits. United we are stronger!
